Remembering The Legacy of LaMonte McLemore: A Tribute to the 5th Dimension Co-Founder

McLemore, who was 90 years old, played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and success of the group, known for hits such as "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" and "Up, Up and Away." His talent and contributions to the music industry will always be remembered and celebrated.

LaMonte McLemore has passed away at the age of 90.





The vocalist was a founding member of The 5th Dimension, a vocal group that achieved success on the charts in the 1960s and 1970s. McLemore died on Tuesday (03.02.26) at his residence in Las Vegas.





McLemore's representative, Jeremy Westby, confirmed that the singer died of natural causes following a stroke.





Born in St. Louis, McLemore served in the US Navy as an aerial photographer before pursuing a career in music.





His musical journey began with the Hi-Fi's, a jazz ensemble that included Marilyn McCoo, who would later become his bandmate in The 5th Dimension.





McLemore and McCoo, along with childhood friends Billy Davis Jr. and Ronald Towson, formed a group called the Versatiles, which later evolved into The 5th Dimension after signing with Soul City Records in 1965.





The group achieved success with their rendition of the Mamas and the Papas' song "Go Where You Wanna Go" in 1967, followed by the hit "Up, Up and Away" which earned them four Grammy Awards.





The peak of The 5th Dimension's commercial success came in 1969 with the release of "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In," which topped the charts for six weeks and won multiple Grammy Awards.





LaMonte McLemore is survived by his wife Mieko McLemore, their daughter Ciara, and their son Darin.
