Rranscript Video:
- 0:00 | I guess the start of season 3 picks up
- 0:03 | where season 2 leaves off Shawn has
- 0:06 | asked Carly out on a date and she said
- 0:09 | yes and so we will get to see Shawn go
- 0:11 | on that first date and I guess that sets
- 0:14 | it up and sets us up for the season in
- 0:16 | in terms of looking fo matically at love
- 0:19 | and how Shawn is experiencing it and
- 0:22 | where that journey will take him
- 0:26 | things between them will go step by step
- 0:29 | and will be teased out a little bit by
- 0:31 | little bit I love that David Shaw you
- 0:36 | know does that so brilliantly in his
- 0:38 | writing it's just kind of teasing out
- 0:40 | these little moments and allowing us to
- 0:42 | explore the nuances of a relationship
- 0:45 | instead of feeling like we need to rush
- 0:47 | through you know a first date to get to
- 0:50 | a kiss or to get to whatever it leads to
- 0:52 | and so it certainly goes step by step
- 0:56 | that allows us I think as an audience to
- 0:59 | really look at these tiny little wins
- 1:02 | that we all can relate to but oftentimes
- 1:05 | don't get to see in other shows
- 1:09 | so aside from Shawn's quest to find love
- 1:13 | which i think is a quest we all are on
- 1:16 | in our individual lives as well the
- 1:19 | exciting thing about season 3 is that
- 1:22 | the residents are getting their first
- 1:24 | opportunity to have their first surgery
- 1:27 | and so we will see each of them in
- 1:30 | whatever order the story ends up taking
- 1:33 | us in going on those you know first
- 1:37 | surgery journeys and and seeing where it
- 1:40 | takes them so I think from Shawn's
- 1:42 | perspective it's obviously something
- 1:45 | that he has long looked forward to and
- 1:47 | sort of seen as this culminating moment
- 1:50 | for him in his career but it may not go
- 1:53 | entirely according to plan
- 1:57 | I think there's a stereotype of someone
- 2:00 | who has autism that they somehow can't
- 2:03 | grow or learn or change and yes Shawn
- 2:06 | will of course always have autism and
- 2:08 | that doesn't mean that he can't
- 2:10 | constantly you know learn and grow up
- 2:15 | and get older as we all do and therefore
- 2:17 | change because of that and because of
- 2:19 | these obstacles that have put in his way
- 2:21 | and the people that he meets I think as
- 2:24 | he's become more comfortable in the
- 2:25 | hospital it's been really nice to get a
- 2:28 | greater sense of his you know what he
- 2:32 | finds funny the people that he may fall
- 2:34 | in love with and why those those little
- 2:39 | human sides to him that be he was
- 2:40 | perhaps a little bit more guarded about
- 2:43 | or incapable of expressing at the
- 2:45 | beginning we now get greater insight
- 2:48 | into
- 2:51 | people do like Shawn and are drawn to
- 2:54 | him hopefully I think I've always
- 2:58 | thought since their very beginning the
- 3:00 | hopeful outlook on the world and the
- 3:03 | optimistic way that he views humanity
- 3:06 | and believing that people are inherently
- 3:08 | good people is a message that yeah that
- 3:13 | that people have connected to and have
- 3:17 | connected to Shawn through that
- 3:20 | if we're speaking generally in season
- 3:22 | three one of the shifts is that we just
- 3:25 | focus more personally on every character
- 3:28 | we either go home with them or new
- 3:31 | relationships are formed or we further
- 3:35 | examine current relationships and yeah
- 3:38 | we just in even while still upholding
- 3:40 | the procedural structure and in these
- 3:43 | great medical cases we do get more
- 3:46 | personal seem a little spotlight on
- 3:47 | their personal relationships this year
- 3:51 | for me personally there's a lot of a lot
- 3:56 | of lessons coming some hard ones you
- 3:58 | know I think we haven't seen Melendez
- 4:00 | challenged to the point that we're gonna
- 4:02 | see during this third season and not
- 4:05 | always meeting that challenge you know
- 4:06 | in which i think is a new feeling for
- 4:09 | Melendez and and us there's a certain
- 4:13 | caution that comes with that which can
- 4:14 | almost be detrimental to him you know
- 4:16 | the level that he works at so navigating
- 4:20 | that is gonna be a big thing and as well
- 4:22 | as find the beginning of the season that
- 4:25 | with her promotion just really changes
- 4:29 | things a lot you know this was a
- 4:30 | confidante someone that we worked on
- 4:32 | cases together and and now there's a
- 4:34 | certain in some ways a divide
- 4:39 | so far it's been that you know she's had
- 4:41 | to navigate what that means for her how
- 4:43 | much of herself does she compromise and
- 4:48 | what is she willing to sacrifice you
- 4:51 | know personally or professionally which
- 4:53 | one
- 4:54 | I think she's currently well not
- 4:57 | currently but it's just trying to
- 4:58 | balance it perfectly and I think she's
- 5:01 | struggling
- 5:04 | Melendez has grown and that he's been a
- 5:06 | lot more open outside help you know
- 5:10 | obviously with the entrance of dr. Shawn
- 5:13 | Murphy and his different ideas I've
- 5:15 | always kind of seen him in Melendez and
- 5:17 | not opposites but mirrors of each other
- 5:21 | you know I think there's things they
- 5:22 | both really um Envy in the other you
- 5:25 | know as Shaun says in the beginning you
- 5:27 | know you're a lot smarter than doctors I
- 5:29 | trained with you know and I'm I know I
- 5:30 | have a lot to learn from you and of
- 5:32 | course you know we're all seeing the
- 5:34 | same thing that Melendez has a lot to
- 5:36 | learn from him and I think there's an
- 5:38 | Envy in the abilities that he has that
- 5:40 | that one does doesn't but when you put
- 5:43 | those together and his willingness now
- 5:45 | to really you know be more open to Shawn
- 5:48 | but as well still holding fast to
- 5:51 | training him like everyone else in
- 5:52 | treating him like every other resident
- 5:54 | who was an unknown until they're not you
- 5:56 | know and making sure they're ready
- 5:57 | well a big defining moment for LEM would
- 6:00 | be when she almost died in season two I
- 6:03 | think that sort of broke her open a
- 6:06 | little bit because you know as soon as
- 6:08 | she's I don't know how many days in
- 6:10 | recovery she is and she's like alright
- 6:11 | listen I have feelings for you I'm just
- 6:13 | gonna tell you so I would say that the
- 6:14 | evolution there for her would be prior
- 6:17 | to that she was only career driven she
- 6:19 | it's revealed that she was she's
- 6:21 | divorced and I think she was just kind
- 6:23 | of like well I'm just gonna have some
- 6:26 | one-night stands and go on dates maybe
- 6:28 | but really just singularly focused on
- 6:30 | work and then as soon as that happened
- 6:32 | to her I think she was like oh you know
- 6:34 | what it's time to do some of the things
- 6:37 | that I didn't make time for and so her
- 6:40 | evolution might be her maturation
- 6:43 | process is to be a little more
- 6:46 | vulnerable
- 6:48 | some of the banter they have the ease
- 6:50 | they have the fun they have with one
- 6:52 | another they ribbed each other all
- 6:55 | through season two I think also that
- 6:58 | these two characters have been created
- 7:01 | that are just such strong personalities
- 7:03 | and to find them soften and meld into
- 7:06 | each other is kind of a it's refreshing
- 7:09 | to see we see a very different side of
- 7:11 | these two that couldn't happen in any
- 7:13 | other way I don't think they're really
- 7:16 | good argue they have written them is
- 7:18 | very good that's what I'm looking for
- 7:21 | they argue well yeah sparring partner is
- 7:23 | it yeah yeah I was thinking I was like
- 7:25 | what's the word I'm looking for combat
- 7:27 | no yeah sparring partners they're great
- 7:29 | sparring partners and I think that
- 7:31 | that's something that limb respects
- 7:33 | quite a bit about Melendez
- 7:36 | so here we are the beginning of season 3
- 7:38 | the good doctor at the end of season 2
- 7:40 | my character dr. Andrews made a very big
- 7:43 | decision and that was to put his own
- 7:46 | career on the line to save the job of
- 7:49 | our very own good doctor dr. Sean Murphy
- 7:52 | and at the very beginning of this season
- 7:56 | we see the consequences of that decision
- 7:58 | so we see that he ostensibly has lost
- 8:03 | his job because he decided
- 8:09 | the premise that's been developed for
- 8:10 | season 3 for dr. Andrews on on our show
- 8:13 | is really interesting because the first
- 8:15 | two seasons he was in position of
- 8:18 | leadership he was the chief of surgery
- 8:19 | the first season attempting to become
- 8:21 | president the second season he becomes
- 8:24 | president and is also the chief of
- 8:26 | surgery and then now the third season he
- 8:28 | has been completely demoted back to
- 8:31 | where he was before we even met him in
- 8:34 | the first season so I think that's
- 8:36 | really interesting it's really
- 8:37 | interesting to explore how that changes
- 8:39 | a character's personality and approach
- 8:41 | also how that character interacts
- 8:44 | differently with the other people
- 8:45 | particularly having a new boss they used
- 8:48 | to work for him
- 8:50 | when I look at the way our show is
- 8:55 | written David Shore does such a
- 8:59 | wonderful job
- 9:00 | making each character really specific
- 9:03 | that I get excited to read the next
- 9:06 | script and whenever it gets published I
- 9:07 | think I think all the actors we go right
- 9:09 | in and we read as soon as it comes out
- 9:11 | even if we're in the midst of shooting
- 9:13 | another episode because because we all
- 9:15 | really love the writing and we all
- 9:17 | really love the show and you're able to
- 9:20 | weave a journey or an arc for a
- 9:24 | character because the Givens exist and I
- 9:28 | think the reason why people love the
- 9:29 | good doctor so much is that a hospital
- 9:31 | is just a microcosm of society
- 9:35 | people come up to me in airports or
- 9:39 | wherever and talk about hey I have a
- 9:42 | cousin who deals with autism or I have a
- 9:47 | son or a daughter or a brother or sister
- 9:51 | who's dealing with it or I'm dealing
- 9:54 | with being on the spectrum and this
- 9:59 | allows me to articulate some of the
- 10:02 | things that I'm feeling and obviously
- 10:04 | you know dr. Shawn Murphy isn't
- 10:07 | attempting in any way to be every person
- 10:11 | who's dealing with autism in any way
- 10:13 | however the folks that have talked to me
- 10:15 | say hey some some little glimpse of the
- 10:18 | way he articulated that that's the way I
- 10:20 | feel sometimes so I actually showed that
- 10:22 | clip or I showed that scene to somebody
- 10:25 | and they understood me better and I
- 10:27 | think that's a beautiful thing
- 10:30 | what I've really enjoyed about playing
- 10:33 | dr. Andrews is that David shorn the
- 10:37 | writing team have really created a
- 10:39 | wonderful arc and a journey for a
- 10:42 | character that was all about aspiration
- 10:44 | aspiration aspiration with a lot of ego
- 10:47 | ego ego ego achieve it but then what
- 10:52 | does that even mean and then lose it all
- 10:55 | or sacrifice it all
- 10:57 | so really sublimate the ego so the the
- 11:01 | act that he took at the end of last
- 11:03 | season it's going into this season is
- 11:06 | his ego was completely sublimated by
- 11:08 | choice by choice and I think that
- 11:13 | resonates with people because people
- 11:14 | like to see a journey
- 11:17 | season two in season three basically
- 11:20 | blend right into each other one picks up
- 11:21 | right after the other so Morgan is you
- 11:25 | know on her journey of continuing to be
- 11:28 | the best doctor she can be but also in
- 11:31 | her relationships with other actors just
- 11:33 | learning from them and growing and
- 11:36 | affecting them and just same old Morgan
- 11:42 | when Morgan first came on the scene she
- 11:45 | was definitely a bit of a troublemaker
- 11:48 | stirring stuff up her competitiveness
- 11:50 | and her unapologetic unapologetic
- 11:53 | intelligence was something that
- 11:54 | definitely rubbed people the wrong way
- 11:55 | and over time you you know we've gotten
- 11:59 | to see Morgan she's more of a complete
- 12:01 | person you we've seen her be emotional
- 12:03 | we've seen her deal with loss we've seen
- 12:06 | her fun side and that's just gonna
- 12:08 | continue to happen more and more
- 12:12 | you know what people tend to respond to
- 12:16 | with Morgan is this is what I hear from
- 12:18 | fans on you know social media Instagram
- 12:21 | and whatnot they they talk about how
- 12:23 | they love how confident she is and
- 12:26 | unapologetic she is and that's something
- 12:28 | that I think people initially hated but
- 12:30 | now people have really grown to love and
- 12:32 | appreciate they see it's not from this
- 12:34 | place of anger or trying to hurt
- 12:36 | somebody but it's really just you know
- 12:38 | speaking her mind and you know embracing
- 12:41 | her strengths which is something that
- 12:44 | I've actually started to do myself it's
- 12:48 | really cool how your character can
- 12:49 | actually kind of affect you in your own
- 12:50 | life and I really enjoy it
- 12:54 | contrary to what everyone thinks one
- 12:57 | actually does like Sean and does care
- 13:00 | for him and want him to do well and I
- 13:03 | think Morgan approaches most things like
- 13:06 | a scientist and I think she's fascinated
- 13:07 | with Sean going on this date
- 13:09 | and his relationship but when he does
- 13:11 | need help she will be guarding Lee help
- 13:14 | [Music]
- 13:17 | Coover is like my first home I love
- 13:19 | Vancouver so much canadians are crazy
- 13:22 | cool and it's one of the most beautiful
- 13:24 | places in the world so I really love
- 13:26 | living here
- 13:29 | Alex parks character at the end of
- 13:31 | season two kind of found himself in the
- 13:34 | middle of juggling family life and work
- 13:36 | life and you know it the the things that
- 13:41 | broke down his marriage become evident
- 13:43 | in in the end of season two and how he
- 13:47 | has trouble balancing those things so we
- 13:50 | end up in season three and you know
- 13:53 | we're not sure we haven't really started
- 13:55 | exploring that side of it yet little
- 13:57 | pieces are have been sprinkled in
- 13:59 | through the scripts but season three we
- 14:01 | opened up with Alex you know trying to
- 14:03 | be the best doctor he can be and you
- 14:06 | know having a competitive spirit with
- 14:07 | Morgan Resnick and developing this
- 14:10 | really cool relationship between him and
- 14:13 | Shawn
- 14:15 | so my characters you know from the time
- 14:17 | I was introduced at the end of season 1
- 14:20 | to now you know it's I think first he
- 14:23 | was just such a because he was a former
- 14:25 | cop making a big shift in his career at
- 14:29 | a later age having gone through a
- 14:31 | divorce I think you've seen a more
- 14:33 | colder version of someone who's kind of
- 14:36 | desensitized to the just in general to
- 14:39 | not humanity but you know it's it's just
- 14:43 | more matter-of-fact and more clinical
- 14:46 | with how he approaches things and I
- 14:48 | think as this season gone has gone
- 14:50 | through in the second season these cases
- 14:53 | affect him and balancing life and work
- 14:56 | affect him and now in season 3 you know
- 14:59 | he's starting to feel his place in the
- 15:00 | hospital and have some fun here
- 15:04 | what I anticipate for my character is
- 15:06 | season 3 is I think there's gonna be
- 15:09 | more banter and more coming this
- 15:12 | competitive spirit between me and Morgan
- 15:14 | Resnick and kind of this friendship
- 15:19 | between Sean and and Alex Park which is
- 15:21 | just an interesting juxtaposition of two
- 15:23 | characters who couldn't be from two
- 15:24 | different worlds and that they that they
- 15:27 | find some sort of like you know buddy
- 15:32 | comfort in each other to people who
- 15:34 | don't share a lot but slowly in their
- 15:36 | own way share with each other me more
- 15:41 | than him and not sure with my family yet
- 15:45 | you know David Shore has kind of left
- 15:47 | that a mystery
- 15:50 | season three being back in Vancouver it
- 15:52 | is starting now until probably
- 15:55 | September's my favorite place in the
- 15:57 | world at this time because it's
- 15:59 | beautiful and and Vancouver has figured
- 16:03 | out how to do everything just outdoors
- 16:06 | wise is it's just amazing for kids for
- 16:09 | families so we're all we're all excited
- 16:12 | and I mean like you walk outside today
- 16:14 | and it's just beautiful
- 16:17 | so we last Celia walking into her and
- 16:23 | Shan Shan's apartment and he's standing
- 16:26 | there with flowers and a certain look on
- 16:28 | his face and I I Leah had thought maybe
- 16:33 | he's trying to you know come at this
- 16:36 | with it from another angle asking her
- 16:40 | out possibly on an on a date and he ends
- 16:43 | up not doing that and so we kind of Lee
- 16:46 | we kind of leave with her processing
- 16:51 | that
- 16:53 | we originally kind of see her struggle
- 16:56 | with her identity and where she feels
- 16:58 | like she fits in in the work environment
- 17:01 | and her personal life and throughout all
- 17:05 | of those changes in her life the one
- 17:08 | constant is her friendship with Shawn
- 17:11 | and because of his honesty and his
- 17:14 | loyalty to being an honest human that
- 17:19 | says solid rock for for all these
- 17:21 | transitions leah has has gone through so
- 17:24 | I think with that we're going to explore
- 17:26 | her finding herself even more and I
- 17:30 | think having someone like Shawn in her
- 17:32 | life who is so comfortable in his own
- 17:35 | skin um is a really good it's a really
- 17:41 | good person have
- 17:44 | relationships in general are I think the
- 17:50 | most universal thing to discuss in
- 17:53 | everyday life it's the most confusing
- 17:55 | thing it's the most thing we kind of all
- 17:58 | yearn for and are just curious about so
- 18:02 | I think with Leah she's been very open
- 18:06 | in her own way about her curiosity with
- 18:09 | relationships and her failures with
- 18:12 | relationships her transitions with like
- 18:14 | her family and the men in her life and
- 18:16 | then also having someone like Shawn and
- 18:19 | what that represents in her life I find
- 18:21 | that it's such a good outlet for people
- 18:25 | to kind of it's a good palette for
- 18:27 | people to kind of place their thoughts
- 18:29 | and maybe kind of think about their own
- 18:32 | relationships in their life
- 18:35 | I think it's just such a challenge for
- 18:40 | again just kind of holding to your own
- 18:44 | your own statements that you inbound
- 18:47 | Ruiz he put in place and not going back
- 18:49 | on them and she put those boundaries up
- 18:52 | and now they're being executed and
- 18:55 | received from Sean and I think again
- 18:59 | that's a very relatable thing when maybe
- 19:03 | that makes you double think certain
- 19:04 | boundaries you put in place to begin
- 19:06 | with and I think you know we're gonna
- 19:08 | explore a little bit of that
- 19:12 | the presence of Carly in the show is to
- 19:14 | show how he's learning how to be open
- 19:17 | and be intimate and explore feelings
- 19:20 | that he hasn't learned about necessarily
- 19:23 | you know he's he's a really brilliant
- 19:25 | doctor obviously he's super textbook
- 19:28 | smart he's able to understand science in
- 19:30 | a way that a lot of people can't and
- 19:32 | that is something that you know he's
- 19:33 | been able to dedicate and commit himself
- 19:35 | to but you can't you can't learn love
- 19:38 | you can't learn romance you can't learn
- 19:41 | the dance of of intimacy with someone
- 19:43 | else without having to do the steps and
- 19:46 | so that is her role in the show I think
- 19:49 | to show the audience how he's continuing
- 19:51 | to grow
- 19:54 | she doesn't want to change anything
- 19:56 | about him she just wants to figure out
- 19:58 | how they can work together because she
- 20:00 | likes him a lot and you know that that
- 20:04 | can be a tricky thing in any kind of
- 20:06 | relationship no matter who it's with is
- 20:09 | is trying to figure out how you work
- 20:11 | well together and what challenges you
- 20:13 | have and how you can work with them
- 20:14 | hopefully not a lot of people are
- 20:16 | walking around trying to figure out how
- 20:18 | to change everybody that they're into
- 20:20 | but I think that the audiences will
- 20:23 | really respect that
- 20:25 | Carly is approaching this relationship
- 20:27 | with new eyes and not expecting him to
- 20:30 | do what you know people that she is
- 20:33 | dated in the past before have done she
- 20:35 | wants to really take him as he is in
- 20:38 | hopes that he will take her as she is
- 20:40 | too I'm hoping that that resonates with
- 20:42 | audiences because it's one of the things
- 20:44 | that I really like about her
- 20:46 | we laugh a lot so granted most of my
- 20:49 | scenes are with Sean and Sean's
- 20:53 | character with Freddie and poor Freddie
- 20:55 | has to listen to me sing pretty much in
- 20:58 | every single scene that we're in at some
- 21:00 | point of me they're gonna be dancing or
- 21:02 | singing somewhere it's how I like get
- 21:05 | through time and so far nobody's told me
- 21:08 | to shut up nobody's like pushed me out
- 21:10 | of the way and said please this is not a
- 21:13 | musical but you know we're only at the
- 21:16 | start of season three so there's time
- 21:18 | I'm sure I'll get on somebody's nerves
- 21:19 | at some point
