Rranscript Video:
- 0:00 | I feel like the idea that our show
- 0:05 | brings so much joy and levity to the
- 0:08 | table is something that's under
- 0:09 | appreciated and underreported in a way I
- 0:13 | I think people tend to think of our show
- 0:14 | sort of the emotional roller coaster
- 0:16 | that we all go on and that is very much
- 0:19 | a part of who we are but I just don't
- 0:22 | think you can discount the other side of
- 0:24 | the coin it's it's very much what the
- 0:26 | dynamic that sort of makes our show work
- 0:27 | and again I just don't think Dan and our
- 0:30 | writers get enough credit for that and
- 0:32 | you know you look at characters whether
- 0:34 | it's like Sully your sterling or Justin
- 0:36 | like they all are you know their
- 0:39 | characters are funny and best like Susan
- 0:43 | these are these are people and
- 0:45 | characters that like constantly bring I
- 0:47 | think the funny to the table and the
- 0:49 | sarcastic and that's just as much like
- 0:52 | you know a part of life is that anything
- 0:55 | else like it's it's sort of what makes
- 0:58 | everything you makes the world go round
- 0:59 | so I'm I'm happy that the this
- 1:03 | particular episode that premiere episode
- 1:04 | sort of nods to that maybe more than
- 1:08 | what people are expecting from our show
- 1:12 | I mean I think when you're lucky enough
- 1:16 | to be on a show like this that sort of
- 1:18 | has found an audience like we have to be
- 1:23 | able to you know have that direct
- 1:25 | connection to an audience and for them
- 1:27 | to sort of see themselves in these
- 1:29 | characters really speaks to the
- 1:31 | universal appeal of what the magic that
- 1:34 | I guess we've sort of found it's
- 1:37 | incredible I mean I feel the same way I
- 1:39 | read the script and obviously I feel
- 1:41 | like I really most to Rebecca because
- 1:43 | it's like wearing a comfortable pair of
- 1:44 | shoes at this point but I can see myself
- 1:47 | in bits and pieces of every single
- 1:48 | character and again I think that just
- 1:50 | speaks to how elevated the writing is
- 1:53 | but also how grounded it is at the same
- 1:55 | time
- 1:58 | oh my gosh it's crazy I've never done
- 2:02 | television really before the show
- 2:05 | certainly not 54 episodes of television
- 2:07 | so it's hard to like think back to the
- 2:12 | last three plus years of my life and a
- 2:16 | show like this that that is so
- 2:18 | emotionally charged and rich and I mean
- 2:23 | I it boggles my mind to think back to
- 2:27 | some of the stuff we did in season one I
- 2:29 | mean I guess I my heart sort of goes
- 2:32 | back to season one because it was such a
- 2:33 | new experience for us and and navigating
- 2:37 | like the inroads of these characters and
- 2:39 | figuring out for me at least like it's
- 2:42 | hard to pinpoint one exact moment
- 2:44 | because you know I have this delicious
- 2:46 | challenge and the the greatest challenge
- 2:48 | probably of my professional life of
- 2:50 | portraying this woman from her mid-20s
- 2:52 | to her now he found out last season like
- 2:55 | mid-80s so that's a lot of life and it
- 2:59 | was certainly overwhelming initially but
- 3:02 | I feel like I really found my groove in
- 3:05 | the middle of season one of like you
- 3:07 | know not overwhelming myself with having
- 3:10 | to know every single answer to the story
- 3:12 | of this woman's life you sort of just
- 3:15 | take the information as it comes to you
- 3:18 | and sort of piecemeal it together but
- 3:21 | but now I feel like I have this really
- 3:24 | complex understanding of who she is and
- 3:27 | I have this like 360 degree view of
- 3:29 | everything
- 3:34 | man Dean I talk a lot about where Jack
- 3:39 | and Rebecca happened to be and and how
- 3:43 | much we look forward to the simpler
- 3:46 | happier times you know it's not Jack and
- 3:51 | war it's not Jack and Rebecca dealing
- 3:53 | with alcoholism or even Jack's death
- 3:57 | it's it's the new love it's discovery
- 3:59 | it's it's also beyond that it's the
- 4:01 | moments when you're really figuring out
- 4:05 | if it's going to work you know taking
- 4:09 | these two individuals that that deeply
- 4:11 | care about each other but figuring out
- 4:12 | it's like well does this fit does your
- 4:15 | world and my world fit outside of you
- 4:18 | know the the vacuum that maybe we occupy
- 4:20 | when it's just us does it does it work
- 4:22 | as a fit so it's it's fun in that that
- 4:25 | first episode we we have a lot of that
- 4:32 | you absolutely have to have levity but
- 4:35 | that's that's part of life you know that
- 4:38 | there are emotional trying moments in
- 4:40 | the show and there are times when
- 4:41 | everybody's like oh god I cry and I'm
- 4:43 | like but you're happy about crying
- 4:45 | you're hopeful about crying there's
- 4:48 | something that this show is able to do
- 4:49 | where it inspires people to be better in
- 4:52 | their lives communicate more understand
- 4:54 | more and that comes beyond the point of
- 4:59 | oh man I'm hurting that that's that's
- 5:02 | the rise of norm healing or the rise of
- 5:05 | I know this this is the better part of
- 5:08 | life and personally I that's what I
- 5:13 | think of when I see the show I don't
- 5:14 | think about tissue boxes
- 5:16 | I don't think about devastation I think
- 5:20 | about hope I think about the the best
- 5:24 | part of life that's discovered and you
- 5:27 | get to really really embrace because
- 5:29 | you're seeing it and and you're locked
- 5:32 | in on it and and it's real it's just
- 5:35 | real
- 5:40 | as storytellers it doesn't make any
- 5:43 | difference to us you know I think it
- 5:47 | adds excitement because it gives us a
- 5:49 | real roadmap I mean as an actor I've
- 5:52 | done shows where you just don't know if
- 5:54 | you're gonna be around or not and you're
- 5:56 | really hoping but I think this is also a
- 5:59 | very confident moment for the audience
- 6:04 | to invest in their time with us and they
- 6:07 | know that we're working toward I don't
- 6:12 | want to say an end or a closure or a
- 6:14 | wrap-up but but we have a lot of time
- 6:17 | still to spend with this family and I
- 6:21 | think it's it's it's an exciting thing
- 6:25 | to be a part of a show that is willing
- 6:28 | to do that for their audience and
- 6:30 | willing to do that for themselves I've
- 6:34 | seen I've seen the end I know the end I
- 6:36 | know a lot of it and getting up to it
- 6:38 | it's gonna be a lot of fun
- 6:43 | I think people relate to the stories
- 6:46 | because they're they're very simple and
- 6:48 | easy to understand you know you
- 6:51 | there are many fathers out there there
- 6:54 | are many husbands there are many wives
- 6:55 | there are many mothers there there are
- 6:59 | fundamental roles we have in society in
- 7:04 | call in our in different cultures that
- 7:08 | everyone gets to experience you know the
- 7:12 | joy of family the loss of family the the
- 7:14 | joy parenthood the I have no idea what
- 7:17 | that's like of parenthood being a son
- 7:21 | being a daughter there they're the most
- 7:25 | fundamental experiences of humanity and
- 7:31 | everyone goes through all so to see
- 7:34 | these stories on screen and to know that
- 7:37 | their lives the audience is not too
- 7:41 | dissimilar from our lives the players I
- 7:44 | think that is what makes people really
- 7:47 | embrace the show is those are my stories
- 7:51 | up on that screen it's not just Jack and
- 7:53 | Rebecca or Kevin Kate and Randle like
- 7:57 | that's my story
- 8:02 | it's it's really about so I mean it's a
- 8:06 | story about the pearsons but it's really
- 8:08 | a story about humanity right and just
- 8:11 | the universal things that the trials and
- 8:14 | tribulations that we all have to endure
- 8:15 | as people
- 8:19 | and and I don't know if it would be the
- 8:23 | same way if the show was called
- 8:24 | something else but the show is about us
- 8:28 | like when you watch it you should see
- 8:30 | yourself right
- 8:35 | a woman came up to me in the airport and
- 8:37 | she said you don't know what you did
- 8:40 | right I was like no I don't but I'm sure
- 8:43 | you're about to tell me and she said the
- 8:47 | way in you and that you and Beth dealt
- 8:48 | with your daughter coming out you had a
- 8:52 | level of grace that I was not able to
- 8:54 | have with my own child
- 8:56 | but I was able to see what grace looks
- 8:58 | like and I'm going to do better if
- 9:02 | that's not why you do it like you know
- 9:05 | to really affect somebody's soul and
- 9:08 | make them want to be a better person it
- 9:11 | doesn't get any better man like I love
- 9:14 | the show
- 9:18 | they do like they say like oh god I
- 9:20 | can't wait to cry again and they're like
- 9:23 | that I'm like I get it like there's
- 9:25 | something very cathartic very purging
- 9:28 | about sort of just letting it out right
- 9:30 | I think the show gives people permission
- 9:32 | to let stuff out that you don't even
- 9:34 | realize that you've been holding on to
- 9:36 | but I think you don't get to that place
- 9:39 | of catharsis without the hi right you
- 9:42 | need the peaks of life in order to feel
- 9:45 | the lows otherwise if it's all flat or
- 9:47 | if it's all low this is like this is
- 9:49 | depressing right so I don't think our
- 9:51 | show is depressing even though you cry
- 9:53 | ultimately it is uplifting and I think
- 9:56 | you those moments of joy are what allow
- 10:00 | people to come back week in and week out
- 10:04 | it feels really good to be back at work
- 10:06 | I really am excited for what's coming up
- 10:10 | next I just feel like last year was such
- 10:13 | an adventure and it left us in such a
- 10:15 | place to do something totally new
- 10:18 | especially in in our household so I'm
- 10:22 | really excited about about what's going
- 10:24 | to happen now
- 10:27 | there is like a lot of lightness and I
- 10:29 | like one of the people comes to mind
- 10:31 | like I love watching Justin and all of
- 10:33 | his scenes and and the way that any time
- 10:36 | we kind of go too far in one direction
- 10:37 | we always kind of bring it back in the
- 10:39 | other direction we always make sure
- 10:40 | there's some kind of laugh or some kind
- 10:41 | of way to to come out of anything that
- 10:44 | gets too heavy and I love that Beth gets
- 10:47 | a lot of she's a lot of like funny lines
- 10:49 | and things that I enjoy saying and enjoy
- 10:51 | playing and and and there I'm almost
- 10:54 | even between Beth and Randall that are
- 10:56 | that are light it's just them trying to
- 10:58 | you know experience parenthood together
- 11:01 | or experience you know this relationship
- 11:03 | thing together and and there's a lot of
- 11:04 | playfulness to it this playfulness with
- 11:07 | Jack and Rebecca with Toby you know
- 11:09 | especially you know he and Kate have a
- 11:12 | lot of playfulness so it I think there's
- 11:14 | a good balance that goes on I don't
- 11:16 | think we ever go too far in one
- 11:18 | direction without bringing it back to
- 11:20 | the to the lighter side
- 11:24 | people are connected so this is us just
- 11:26 | it's just what you said that the
- 11:28 | storylines and the all the things that
- 11:34 | we speak about are things that people go
- 11:36 | through just to put it plain I don't
- 11:38 | think we're taking everything that's
- 11:40 | just ripped from the headlines of our
- 11:43 | lives you know and saying like it's okay
- 11:46 | to talk about them I just did a film and
- 11:49 | one of the lines in it was if it's
- 11:52 | mentionable it's manageable if it's
- 11:54 | mentionable it's manageable and there's
- 11:56 | something about that that resonates in
- 11:58 | our show of like if we can talk about
- 12:00 | this somehow we can manage this and it's
- 12:02 | about not hiding but sort of revealing
- 12:06 | ourselves to one another and and you
- 12:09 | know saying that really putting the
- 12:12 | responsibility of a family you know the
- 12:18 | real responsibilities that family has to
- 12:20 | be there for us regardless right and so
- 12:22 | we keep calling our family to that task
- 12:23 | of like I'm gonna reveal this about
- 12:25 | myself I need you to still be there for
- 12:27 | me Matt that type of thing
- 12:29 | and so I think all those things really
- 12:33 | resonate with people it's a chance to
- 12:36 | just kind of see ourselves and be with
- 12:38 | ourselves and maybe explore the things
- 12:40 | that we don't usually even talk about
- 12:42 | but you know if it's mentionable is
- 12:44 | manageable right
- 12:48 | yeah you know people talk about how
- 12:50 | emotionally moving it was and one of the
- 12:53 | things that you know they talk about
- 12:54 | heiresses beautiful performance and how
- 12:57 | and how sort of heartbreakingly real
- 12:59 | that was but also the way that Randall
- 13:02 | and Beth handled it was was a great
- 13:07 | example of just loving somebody through
- 13:10 | you may not know how to get through it
- 13:11 | in the moment you know but you know that
- 13:13 | you still love this person and you want
- 13:15 | them to express themselves you know and
- 13:20 | be honest I think that's the most
- 13:22 | important thing I would much rather know
- 13:25 | and and and and feel so proud of my
- 13:29 | child for coming to me with that
- 13:31 | information then have some hide them
- 13:33 | hide it and feel ashamed to feel you
- 13:36 | know the worst thing is to do stuff in
- 13:37 | the dark you feel so ashamed feel guilty
- 13:39 | you feel all these things when you can
- 13:40 | you know be open and honest and have
- 13:43 | your family there to be with you support
- 13:44 | you help you through it and guide you
- 13:46 | through and so that was most important
- 13:49 | to me I think that that has to be a
- 13:50 | conversation especially in this country
- 13:53 | so that people don't feel that they have
- 13:56 | to hide or you know feel shame about
- 13:59 | themselves or what they're going through
- 14:00 | about their sexuality all of these
- 14:02 | things so that that was a really kind of
- 14:05 | and that was a really landmark moment
- 14:09 | for the season I think
- 14:13 | yeah I'm not I'm not surprised that the
- 14:16 | story is is surprising and that the
- 14:20 | story is as deep as it is and as
- 14:22 | emotional but I'm always I'm always
- 14:24 | shocked and impressed with how how the
- 14:29 | writers are able to continue to come up
- 14:31 | with all this great material that they
- 14:33 | just can they just seem to just have a
- 14:35 | knack for year after year
- 14:38 | so he's you know he's um he finds
- 14:41 | himself kind of in a difficult place he
- 14:43 | found love again and which doesn't
- 14:46 | happen to a lot of people so he found
- 14:48 | himself was sort of in a happy place
- 14:51 | he felt lucky he sort of thought he has
- 14:53 | his life in order and then this giant
- 14:56 | bump in the road which is he wants to be
- 14:58 | a father and he's with this woman who
- 15:02 | he's in love with who doesn't want
- 15:03 | children so that becomes a deal breaker
- 15:06 | and they both kind of mutually and very
- 15:09 | sad
- 15:10 | sadly decided you could sort of go their
- 15:12 | own ways and now he's kind of in a place
- 15:15 | honestly where he he has time to himself
- 15:18 | and time to sort of reflect and try to
- 15:21 | stay as healthy as he possibly can and I
- 15:24 | think we're gonna see him slow down a
- 15:27 | bit and look inside a little bit more
- 15:30 | than he has been and take a little time
- 15:32 | with himself and be more comfortable
- 15:34 | spending time with himself and getting
- 15:37 | to know himself I know that it that
- 15:39 | sounds kind of strange because here he
- 15:40 | is 39 years old and it's like he doesn't
- 15:47 | know who he is yet but but he really
- 15:49 | doesn't you know he's sort of figuring
- 15:51 | himself out so he does that he also
- 15:53 | reconnects with a few a few family
- 15:57 | members without giving too much away
- 15:59 | that get that starts kind of fairly
- 16:02 | early on in the season and then
- 16:03 | continues throughout and and that'll
- 16:05 | fulfil him as well so hopefully he's on
- 16:07 | this journey of sort of you know
- 16:09 | becoming healthier and more comfortable
- 16:12 | in his own skin
- 16:16 | well I think you know just simply simply
- 16:20 | put I think if you have a show about
- 16:22 | really heavy pressing issues that people
- 16:25 | don't like to talk about all the time
- 16:27 | sometimes it ends up looking like the
- 16:29 | news right and it's like you know it's
- 16:32 | there's something endearing about these
- 16:35 | characters when you're watching them go
- 16:37 | through these things that are yes
- 16:39 | they're difficult but they're very much
- 16:40 | real-life and they're not on an island
- 16:42 | where it's like oh the pearsons have all
- 16:44 | this bad luck they really don't have bad
- 16:46 | luck they have great luck as well and
- 16:48 | this is just real life and sometimes
- 16:50 | life is hard but when you when you can
- 16:55 | laugh through it and we when you can
- 16:57 | enjoy the good times I think that's
- 17:00 | that's what makes them so endearing and
- 17:02 | so relatable to everyone else they're
- 17:04 | not a pathetic family at all at all yes
- 17:06 | we have you know struggles with
- 17:10 | fertility we have death we have you know
- 17:14 | alcoholism we have druggable have people
- 17:17 | that die prematurely we have all that
- 17:20 | stuff but that's life and life is also
- 17:21 | beautiful and so they're not there they
- 17:24 | also have these great you know wonderful
- 17:27 | victories you know Kevin's got a great
- 17:29 | career now there's love in the show
- 17:30 | there's humor in the show so they're
- 17:32 | they're a wonderful family that is just
- 17:35 | sort of like all of us right you have
- 17:37 | these great losses and these wonderful
- 17:38 | victories and sometimes the pain is
- 17:41 | hilarious to be honest with you that's
- 17:43 | your way of dealing with it at least in
- 17:45 | my family sometimes it's like are you
- 17:47 | kidding you know what I mean and it's
- 17:49 | actually kind of funny these weird
- 17:50 | things that'll happen throughout your
- 17:51 | life
- 17:55 | if you do see yourself in any of these
- 17:57 | characters which I know that I do in all
- 17:59 | of them at some you know point
- 18:00 | throughout the season I will look at
- 18:02 | Rebecca or Beth or Randall or Kate or
- 18:05 | Toby or Kevin and be like that's me and
- 18:08 | then I'll see how they react to
- 18:10 | something and I'll be like you know if
- 18:11 | that ever happens to me again I'm gonna
- 18:14 | react a little more like that you know
- 18:16 | it teaches you how to sort of deal with
- 18:17 | things I think without beating you over
- 18:19 | the head with it and saying this is a
- 18:20 | life lesson because that's not really
- 18:22 | what we do but we just sort of tell real
- 18:27 | stories about life and and I think
- 18:30 | people I think people get attached to
- 18:33 | that
- 18:37 | it's really hard to compare because
- 18:38 | they're all of course individually
- 18:40 | amazing but this one for me in
- 18:43 | particular is special
- 18:47 | yeah I don't think anybody saw this
- 18:49 | coming so
- 18:53 | every single thing that happens right
- 18:55 | it's a ripple effect and that we're all
- 18:56 | connected in some way shape or form and
- 18:58 | that stands true for this episode
- 19:01 | obviously in a very personal way for
- 19:04 | Kate so I'm really excited
- 19:10 | yes so we know that in the finale
- 19:13 | Toby shows up and he says well they're
- 19:15 | on their way and everyone's freaking out
- 19:17 | because they don't know if that includes
- 19:18 | Kate or Jack or what's happening and so
- 19:23 | many people are asking like what am i
- 19:24 | skating I'm like she could be at the dry
- 19:25 | cleaners you never know and because the
- 19:31 | story as we've seen in the past three
- 19:34 | three seasons that nothing is
- 19:36 | necessarily linear and so that's great
- 19:39 | to be playful and to not know where
- 19:41 | things are headed and and what's ahead
- 19:43 | for each of these characters but I say
- 19:47 | not to fret
- 19:49 | I think the original magic really is
- 19:52 | these siblings in this really cool
- 19:55 | family that are just trying to figure
- 19:57 | out life and to deal with life on life's
- 20:00 | terms and that there are these these ups
- 20:03 | and downs these peaks and valleys that
- 20:04 | we all are learning to navigate and we
- 20:07 | don't know how so the show I think sort
- 20:09 | of gives you an instruction manual it's
- 20:11 | so to speak of how how do we do this
- 20:14 | and if we've never felt anxiety or had
- 20:18 | weight issues or dealt with race issues
- 20:19 | or paternity issues that oh this is how
- 20:23 | the pearsons handle it and I think
- 20:26 | because I've heard so many stories that
- 20:28 | it brings families closer together so
- 20:31 | they can talk about it so if they have
- 20:33 | their own issues they can say oh well
- 20:34 | and this is us this is how they handled
- 20:37 | it and it makes things a little softer
- 20:39 | to open up and have a conversation about
- 20:41 | which is really special and I think
- 20:42 | that's what great art does is it creates
- 20:45 | a new way of thinking opens up your
- 20:48 | heart your mind and it's done that from
- 20:51 | the show has done that from day one and
- 20:53 | out of the gate you know did you ever
- 20:57 | see a plus-size woman on a scale on
- 20:59 | network television no and not like you
- 21:02 | know an average-sized woman but a
- 21:03 | plus-sized woman who's really struggling
- 21:05 | with something or have you ever seen a
- 21:07 | really successful man have an anxiety
- 21:10 | attack and have his brother consoled him
- 21:12 | you know um
- 21:13 | all of these things that we get to see
- 21:15 | and it's sort of shown up in every
- 21:17 | single episode and it consistently does
- 21:19 | and I don't know how they do it but I
- 21:22 | know that obviously it's changed my life
- 21:24 | and it changes my family's life and so
- 21:25 | many people's lives so I don't know from
- 21:29 | the beginning yeah there are so many
- 21:31 | similarities from the pilot to like the
- 21:34 | finale of this last season but um
- 21:36 | they're also stand-alones as well
- 21:39 | because you see this evolution of this
- 21:41 | family and the siblings and how we're
- 21:44 | all affected by each other
- 21:49 | episode 1 of season 4 is is a starting
- 21:52 | over in many ways so it is almost as if
- 21:56 | we are starting a new series telling a
- 21:59 | new story and this first episode is yeah
- 22:04 | it's very it's very yeah it's definitely
- 22:09 | a throwback to how this all started
- 22:14 | yeah you know a lot of a lot of fans who
- 22:17 | watch this show
- 22:18 | are always talking about how much they
- 22:22 | they cry or the emotion that it brings
- 22:24 | up and I'm always a little like I'm not
- 22:27 | as involved in those storylines so I'm
- 22:29 | like I'm not sure what you're I think it
- 22:31 | shows pretty funny
- 22:32 | at least from where I'm standing where
- 22:34 | I'm standing so I think that the show I
- 22:38 | think a lot of times the show's levity
- 22:41 | gets a little lost but every every
- 22:42 | single character in this show is is very
- 22:46 | well balanced and and very able to to
- 22:53 | slide back and forth between drama and
- 22:56 | levity you know sterling K Brown is
- 22:58 | extremely funny Justin Hartley is one of
- 23:00 | the funniest people I've ever met
- 23:02 | Chrissy is hysterical so the and that's
- 23:06 | how that's that's the balance of life to
- 23:08 | like as sad and as horrible as things
- 23:11 | get there are also good and bright
- 23:14 | moments and I and I think that this show
- 23:16 | has a lot of both
- 23:20 | the story the characters are very
- 23:21 | specific the the storyline is very
- 23:25 | specific and the more specific that this
- 23:27 | show gets I think the broader and
- 23:29 | audience it reaches the more specific it
- 23:33 | gets the more inroads there are for
- 23:35 | people to relate to a character whether
- 23:38 | it's as a brother or a mother a father a
- 23:42 | sibling a best friend a husband or a
- 23:46 | wife and so as the seasons go on I think
- 23:50 | we're just going to attract more and
- 23:51 | more people who who find their way in to
- 23:54 | relating to this family
- 24:00 | yeah I mean they are new parents so the
- 24:04 | the challenges that come with that the
- 24:06 | the great ego death that comes with
- 24:11 | having a child when worrying about
- 24:14 | yourself is no longer your top priority
- 24:17 | for two people two characters who have
- 24:20 | maybe been a little selfish in past
- 24:22 | seasons you know as as all human beings
- 24:24 | are so it'll be interesting to watch
- 24:28 | them shift from thinking only about
- 24:32 | themselves then learning how to think
- 24:34 | about each other and take each other
- 24:36 | into consideration and then once they've
- 24:38 | just about figured that out just barely
- 24:41 | turn their attention to this child baby
- 24:44 | jack so it should be a an eventful
- 24:48 | fourth season
- 24:56 | you
